BUTUAN CITY, Philippines — The red tide alert is still up in Hinatuan, Bislig Bay and Lianga Bay in Surigao del Sur, with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Caraga region reiterating the ban on gathering and selling of shellfish from there.
It clarified though that squid, shrimp and crabs from the three coastal areas are safe to eat.
In its bulletin, the BFAR-Caraga regional office said its latest test results show that shellfish from Lianga Bay, Bislig Bay and the coastal areas of Hinatuan still contained “paralytic shellfish poison” beyond the regulatory limits.
It advised the public that shellfish like mussels, clams, scallops and oysters from these coastal areas were not safe for human consumption.
