Bulusan simmers down

Cet Dematera - The Philippine Star

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines — After recording more than 100 earthquakes for several days, Bulusan Volcano has simmered down.

Only six earthquakes were recorded around the volcano in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) monitoring station in Sorsogon City, said.

However, Rodrigo Guerrero, Phivolcs watchman of Bulusan, said ground deformation and inflation of the volcano’s upper slopes were still observed.

“We are keeping a close watch on Bulusan Volcano now that its alert level is raised to one, which means it is in abnormal condition again,” Guerrero told The STAR.

Phivolcs raised Bulusan’s alert level on Tuesday.

Raden Dimaano, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office head, said they alerted concerned local government units to evacuate residents if Bulusan’s condition worsens.

Bulusan, Irosin, Juban and Casiguran are the towns usually affected by the volcano’s increased seismic activity.
