MANILA, Philippines — State meteorologists have warned residents of Surigao del Sur and Davao Oriental against flooding due to the trough of a low-pressure area.

The weather system will bring light to moderate to at times heavy rains over these areas in the next 24 hours, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

“Isolated to scattered flooding, including flash floods and rain-induced landslides, are likely during heavy or prolonged rainfall, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards,” PAGASA said in an advisory.

The state weather bureau said adjacent areas could experience flooding even in the absence of rain due to surface runoff or swelling of river channels.

As of 3 p.m. yesterday, the low-pressure area was spotted 495 kilometers east of Davao City.

PAGASA weather forecaster Ariel Rojas said the weather system is likely to dissipate after hitting the landmass of Mindanao.
