MANILA, Philippines — Militant farmers are appealing to Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra to issue a special ruling on the case of detained Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) leader Joseph Canlas, who has contracted COVID.
The group said Canlas is in critical condition and should be released based on humanitarian grounds.
Canlas, who is also chairman of the Alyansa ng Magbubukid sa Gitnang Luson, is confined at the JBL Hospital in Pampanga. His oxygen level remains low despite being intubated and connected to a mechanical ventilator.
“Canlas likely contracted COVID while in detention and under the custody of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology. He was arrested on March 30,” KMP leader Rafael Mariano said.
“We demand the immediate release of Canlas and the dismissal of charges against him. While COVID infection rates remain high, political prisoners and all persons deprived of liberty could suffer the same life-threatening situation as Canlas,” Mariano said.
The KMP expressed belief that the miserable jail condition worsened Canlas’ health.
The group said Canlas only complained of arthritis and joint pains before his arrest and detention.
