Fishing banned in Misamis after oil spill

Gerry Lee Gorit, Rhodina Villanueva - The Philippine Star

MISAMIS ORIENTAL, Philippines — Fishing activities have been banned in the waters affected by an oil spill off Jasaan town in this province after a cargo vessel sank on Saturday last week.

Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu said the Environmental Management Bureau has been coordinating with the Jasaan municipal government and Coast Guard personnel to prevent further contamination of coastal communities.

Initial investigation showed that three tons of bunker oil spilled in the waters off the coast of Barangays Lower Jasaan, Upper
Jasaan, Luz Banzon, Kimaya and Solana.

The owner of the cargo vessel committed to pay for the damage during a meeting with Mayor Redentor Jardin and other concerned officials.
