Espenido surrenders over homicide raps

Emmanuel Tupas - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Controversial police official Lt. Col. Jovie Espenido and two other police officers surrendered on Tuesday in connection with the homicide cases they are facing over a police operation in 2017.

Espenido, Executive M/Sgt. Renato Martir Jr. and Cpl. Sandra Louise Bantilan surrendered to the police station in Barangay Aguada.

Cpl. Jay Detalla, Ozamiz police desk officer, said the three were released after posting bail.

Detalla did not mention the court that issued the arrest warrants.

In a text message, Espenido said they were released after posting bail of P720,000 each for six counts of homicide.

The case stemmed from the complaint of a certain Carmelita Manzano whose relatives were killed in an alleged shootout with Espenido and his men.

Espenido said the fatalities were suspected criminals.
