Couple dies in fire

MANILA, Philippines — An elderly couple died when a fire razed their two-story house in Barangay Roxas District, Quezon City before dawn yesterday.

Arson probers identified the fatalities as Mariano Mejia Jr. and his wife Benita, both 80 years old.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said the blaze broke out at around 1:21 a.m.

The fire reached the first alarm and was put out at around 2 a.m.

Damage to property was placed at P3 million.

The BFP said the fire started on the ground floor of the house where the couple’s remains were found.

Reports said Benita was already out of the house, but she came back for her bedridden husband.

A total of 25 fire trucks and four ambulances responded to the scene.
