Bucor destroys 10,000 banned items in Bilibid

MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) destroyed on Friday around 10,000 banned items confiscated from inmates of the New Bilibid Prison.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the BuCor said the contraband were confiscated in searches conducted from October 2020 up to last month.

According to BuCor, most of the confiscated items were weapons: 1,767 improvised pointed weapons; 1,424 bladed weapons; 167 wooden batons; six slings; 28 improvised arrows; nine hammers and 11 saws.

BuCor personnel also seized 44 DVD players; six electric fans; 129 cell phones; 18 pocked Wi-Fis; a Wi-Fi router; two sets of cable television equipment; a mini-monitor; 44 headsets and earphones; 119 chargers and 36 cell phone batteries.

The bureau confiscated 125 liters of fermented yeast, used by inmates to brew their own liquor; 1,531 bars of tobacco; 3,358 likit or hand-rolled cigarettes; and 32 cigarettes.

“Conforming to its twin mandate of effective safekeeping and rehabilitation of persons deprived of liberty, the BuCor is continuously regulating search and confiscation of contrabands,” the bureau said in its statement.

BuCor said it is conducting an investigation into the smuggling of contraband into the state penitentiary.
