2 Samar village chiefs shot dead

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines — Three persons, two of them barangay captains, were killed in a gun attack in Barangay Balugo in Tarangnan, Samar on Wednesday.

Police said Bonifacio Babon, 63, chairman of Barangay Marabut, and Amelita Helbolario, chairwoman of Barangay Awang, died while being treated in a hospital. Habal-habal driver Elpidio Babon Jr. died at the scene.

Lt. Aileen Velarde, Samar police spokesperson, said the victims were on a habal-habal on their way to attend a meeting of the Liga ng mga Barangays and Municipal Peace and Order Council when they were waylaid.
