MAGUINDANAO, Philippines — A municipal councilor of South Upi town was unhurt in an ambush in Barangay Lamud on Friday.
Police said Basit Kamid’s security escorts managed to return fire, preventing the gunmen from closing in.
Authorities have yet to determine if the ambush was related to the gun attack on a convoy of local officials and relief workers in Barangay Pandan on Monday that left a villager dead and three others wounded.
Mayor Reynalbert Insular, who was in the convoy, said he was the target of the attack.
Insular, other local officials and municipal government relief workers were on their way back to the town center from an outreach mission in Barangay Itaw when they were attacked.
