QUEZON CITY, Philippines — At least 100 families were left homeless when a fire broke out at a slum area in Barangay Culiat, Quezon City on Tuesday night.

Arson probers said the fire started at around 8:18 p.m. and reached the fifth alarm. At least 19 fire trucks responded to the scene.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said the blaze originated on the ground floor of a two-story house owned by the Bantidaan family.

Based on initial investigation, the BFP said the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit.

Around 50 houses mostly made of light construction materials were destroyed before the fire was doused at past 10 p.m.

Damage to property was placed at P75,000.

The affected families are taking shelter at an evacuation center in the barangay.
