Magnitude-4.9 quake jolts Metro Manila
MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude-4.9 earthquake shook parts of Metro Manila and nearby provinces before dawn yesterday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.The temblor occurred at 2:14 a.m., and was centered some nine kilometers northwest of General Nakar, Quezon. Phivolcs warned of possible aftershocks.
It was felt at Intensity 4 – classified by Phivolcs as “moderately strong” – in General Nakar, Quezon; Malolos City and San Jose Del Monte City, Bulacan; Lumban, Laguna; Quezon City; Caloocan City; Makati City and Rodriguez, Rizal.
It was also felt at Intensity 3 or “weak” in Lucban, Quezon; Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija; Caloocan City; Malabon City; Talim Island and Binangonan, Rizal; ; Intensity 2 or “slightly felt” in Santa Cruz, Laguna; San Mateo, Antipolo City and Tanay, Rizal; Marikina City; Navotas City and Plaridel, Bulacan; and Intensity 1 or “scarcely perceptible” in Guinayangan, Quezon.
Instrumental Intensity 4 was felt in Navotas City; Intensity 3 in Dolores, Quezon; Plaridel, Malolos City and Calumpit, Bulacan; Guagua, Pampanga; Marikina City; Quezon City; Pasig City; Mandaluyong City; Malabon City and San Juan City.
Instrumental Intensity 2 in Palayan City, Nueva Ecija; Baler, Aurora; Gumaca, Quezon; Tagaytay City, Cavite; Las Piñas City and San Ildefonso, Bulacan; and Intensity 1 in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija; Muntinlupa City; Guinayangan, Lucena City and Lucban, Quezon; Daet, Camarines Norte; and Carmona and Bacoor City, Cavite.
Instrumental intensity refers to the ground shaking detected by seismic instruments.
