MANILA, Philippines — Around 50 Special Action Force (SAF) commandos are currently undergoing training under the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) to counter motorcycle-riding criminals, an official said yesterday.

President Duterte, an avid motorcyclist, directed the Philippine National Police to train more police officers in using motorcycles to match them against motorcycle-riding killers and robbers.

Col. Wilson Doromal, who heads the HPG’s National Capital Region field office, said yesterday the 45-day course involves tactical skills in using motorcycles.

“We are also teaching them how to use Armalites while on motorcycles,” he said in a phone interview.

Doromal said it is up to the SAF if it will deploy its personnel to help in the campaign against motorcycle-riding criminals.

The SAF is composed of personnel highly trained in urban warfare. Police commandos can also be tapped during hostage crisis situations.
