Four other soldiers were wounded in the firefight that occurred at the border of Candon City and Sta. Lucia town.
The encounter, which started at 2 p.m. along a road between Candon and Sta. Lucia lasted 10 hours, according to Maj. Rogelio Dumbrique of the Army’s 81st Infantry Battalion.
The military withheld the identity of the slain soldier until his relatives are notified.
Dumbrique said one of the slain rebels was a female medical officer. The other was said to be a bomb expert of the New People’s Army (NPA).
Two villagers were wounded in the crossfire.
Reports said the troopers were responding to a report about the presence of a group of rebels along the road, some two kilometers away from the city proper of Candon.
