Magnitude 5.8 quake jolts Surigao Sur
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned of damage and aftershocks from a magnitude 5.7 earthquake that hit Surigao del Sur yesterday.
The temblor occurred at around 2:06 p.m., with its epicenter located 44 kilometers northeast of Hinatuan town.
The quake was felt at Intensity 5, which is classified as strong, in Hinatuan.
It was felt at Intensity 4, classified as moderately strong, in Bislig City in Surigao del Sur and Nabunturan and Mawab in Davao de Oro and Intensity 3 in Tandag City, Maco, Maragusan, also in Davao de Oro; Manay and Mati in Davao Oriental; Davao City; Gingoog City, and Magsaysay in Misamis Oriental.
The quake was felt at Intensity 2 in Laak, Davao de Oro; Balingasag, Jasaan, Villanueva and Tagoloan in Misamis Oriental; Cagayan de Oro City; Quezon, Maramag, Valencia City, Malaybalay City, Cabanglasan and Manolo Fortich in Bukidnon, and Rosario in Agusan del Sur.
Phivolcs said the quake had a depth of 14 kilometers and was tectonic in origin.
