MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) yesterday warned motorists against using bicycle lanes as parking spaces or a way to avoid heavy traffic.

PNP deputy chief for operations Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar said using lanes reserved for bicycles not only disrespects bicycle riders but also puts their lives at risk.

“Bicycle riders also have the right to use the roads especially if they are allowed to go through bicycle lanes that have been designated by the local government units,” he said in a statement.

Eleazar issued the warning following complaints from bicycle riders about how private vehicles “invade” bike lanes.

This actions of motorists, Eleazar said, have forced bike riders to shift to other lanes, which puts them at risk of being hit by buses and other vehicles.

“We call on the motorists to get used to this by starting to respect the intended users of bicycle lanes,” he said.
