MANILA, Philippines — The number coding scheme in Metro Manila will remain suspended until June 5, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced over the weekend.

With the implementation of the more lenient general community quarantine, motorists are expecting monstrous traffic jams along major thoroughfares in the metropolis today.

The city government of Makati will be implementing the modified number coding scheme starting today.

Vehicles that have two or more passengers will be exempted from the policy.

The MMDA clarified that the planned modified number coding scheme would still push through. But the date of its implementation has yet to be determined.

MMDA general manager Jojo Garcia said the traffic scheme still has to go through the legal process before it gets to be published in major newspapers to inform the public about its implementation.

Under the scheme, private vehicles may still go on trips even if their car plate numbers are under a certain day-code as long as the passengers on board are not less than two.

Medical frontliners are exempted from the scheme.
