MANILA, Philippines — Residents of Metro Manila flocked to malls and markets over the weekend after lockdown protocols were eased under the modified enhanced community quarantine.
With the partial reopening of business establishments and some services, people gathered in Divisoria and Blumentritt in Manila despite the presence of police officers.
Shoppers also crowded malls in Quezon City after a two-month lockdown as food businesses and shops, including those selling books and electronics, were allowed to reopen. Only salons and dine-in restaurants remain closed.
In Caloocan, the city council lifted the liquor ban.
Residents are allowed to buy alcoholic beverages from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
In Taguig, the city government allowed jogging and other outdoor exercises.
Only one member per household will be allowed to jog from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. provided they wear a face mask.
Persons below 21 years old, senior citizens, pregnant women and those with pre-existing medical conditions are not allowed to go out.
The city government said swimming pools, gyms and other sports centers would remain closed.
San Juan COVID cases decreasing
San Juan City recorded a slower rate of coronavirus disease transmission among its residents, Mayor Francis Zamora said yesterday.
“As of May 15, our doubling time rate slowed down at 8.30 days from the previous 7.69 days,” Zamora said.
Of the 2,105 city residents who were tested, Zamora said only 36 were found positive for the virus.
“We will continue to implement strict quarantine protocols to ensure the safety of the people of San Juan,” he said.
