MANILA, Philippines — At least 21 high-powered firearms were seized from New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Eastern Mindanao in less than a week.
The military said five M16 rifles, an M4 with an M203 grenade launcher, an M14, an M563 and two AK-47s were seized in Barangay Aliwagwag, Cateel, Davao Oriental.
Army soldiers also recovered a machine gun, three M16 rifles and an M14 in Lupon, Davao de Oro and three M16s and an M2 Carbine in Baganga, Davao Oriental.
Navy Capt. Jonathan Zata, Armed Forces of the Philippines public affairs chief, said former NPA rebels played a key role in the recovery of the high-powered firearms.
“Our troops were guided by former rebels to areas where the NPAs have been storing or hiding their weapons,” Zata said.
Army chief Lt. Gen. Gilbert Gapay commended soldiers of the 10th Infantry Division for the recovery of the arms cache.
“This feat will surely cripple the NPA’s ability to disrupt the peace our communities deserve. Keep up the good work,” Gapay said.
