Practice family planning amid ECQ, couples urged

MANILA, Philippines — Following the warning of the United Nations Population Fund that the lockdowns may result in seven million unwanted pregnancies worldwide, the Department of Health (DOH) yesterday reminded couples to practice family planning during the enhanced community quarantine.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the DOH is working with local government units to promote reproductive health.

“Because we are under quarantine, couples may not be able to visit health centers to avail themselves of family planning services and supplies. So we want to remind couples to do what is necessary to prevent unwanted pregnancies,” Vergeire said at a press briefing.

She said couples may ask for condoms and contraceptive pills good for three months.

Barangay health centers in areas under quarantine remain open to serve the public, Vergeire said.

She urged couples to consult with midwives, nurses and doctors by calling the Telemedicine hotlines or the Commission on Population.
