MANILA, Philippines — The still unidentified man who killed a Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) official earlier this month followed him from the time he left the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) compound, closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage obtained by investigators shows.
The footage showed a motorcycle-riding assailant overtaking BuCor legal division chief Frederic Santos’ car on Feb. 19 after he left the prison compound to fetch his daughter at Southernside Montessori School, National Capital Region Police Office chief Maj. Gen. Debold Sinas said on Friday.
Aside from the footage, Sinas said BuCor has turned over some of Santos’ case folders that might give a lead on his killing’s motive.
“We are comparing the CCTV footage and we are coordinating with NBP personnel and investigators,” he said in a press briefing yesterday.
Santos, who testified on the good conduct time allowance for sale racket during a Senate inquiry last year, was the 15th prison official shot dead in Muntinlupa since 2011.
CCTV cameras in the area where Santos was shot were not working, according to investigators, who added that witnesses were afraid to testify.
The dashboard camera in Santos’ vehicle failed to capture enough footage to help identify the victim’s killer.
