Traffic officer gunned down
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — An officer of this city’s road and traffic administration (RTA) was shot dead during a clearing operation in Barangay Puerto on Friday night.
Mark Langam and his team were apprehending tricycles and other vehicles illegally plying the highway when he was killed.
Witnesses said the lone assailant, who was on a motorcycle, shoot Langam twice.
Langam had an argument with the assailant over a traffic infraction, according to Maj. Evan Viñas, spokesperson for the city police.
Footage of closed-circuit television cameras taken before and during the shooting showed the assailant appeared to be looking for the victim.
When he saw Langam, the assailant returned to his motorcycle parked nearby.
Viñas said Langam got separated from the team, which gave the assailant a chance to shoot him.
The city government said it would review the protocol on security and safety of traffic enforcers.
