117 pedestrians killed in 2019 -– MMDA

MANILA, Philippines — Pedestrians are the “most vulnerable road users” in Metro Manila, with 117 deaths due to road collisions in 2019, according to a report by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

The latest number of pedestrian deaths went down to 117 in 2019 from 141 fatalities in 2018 and 167 in 2017, the MMDA’s latest Metro Manila Accident Reporting and Analysis System report showed.

“(This is) because of the continuous efforts of MMDA in providing traffic engineering solutions and interventions for safer roads,” the MMDA said.

The 117 pedestrians accounted for almost half or 45 percent of total fatalities that year, making them “high-risk” road users, the MMDA said.

“Pedestrians are the most vulnerable road users. This makes them high-risk safety concerns not only in Metro Manila but nationwide. It has recorded the highest number of deaths yearly and constitute 45 percent of all road traffic fatalities in 2019,” the MMDA said.

Meanwhile, 4,605 pedestrians were injured in non-fatal road collisions last year.

Private cars and motorcycles have the highest percentage of road crashes yearly because of their greater numbers on the road, the MMDA said.

At least 234 motorcycles, 98 trucks, and 80 cars figured in fatal road crashes last year, the MMDA said.

According to the MMDA, there are 476,102 private cars plying the roads of Metro Manila as of 2018. Motorcycles number at 1,284,345 registered units.
