C-5 Metro Manila’s deadliest road – MMDA
MANILA, Philippines — For three consecutive years, Circumferential Road 5 (C-5) was listed as the “deadliest road” in the metropolis based on the number of fatal accidents recorded, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced yesterday.
According to the agency’s Metro Manila Accident Reporting and Analysis System report, C-5 topped the list with 31 fatalities from vehicular accidents last year, up from 27 in 2018 and 23 in 2017.
C-5 became Metro Manila’s deadliest because of its road conditions as well as the presence of trucks and motorcycles along the narrow highway, MMDA traffic chief Bong Nebrija told The STAR.
The highway spans 32.5 kilometers traversing Valenzuela, Quezon City, Pasig, Makati, Taguig, Pasay, Parañaque and Las Piñas.
Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon city, tagged as “killer highway,” came in second with 23 fatal road crashes, up from 10 deaths in 2018 and 17 in 2017.
The 12.4-kilometer Commonwealth Avenue registered the highest number of accidents due to overspeeding, the MMDA said.
Nebrija said Commonwealth Avenue registered fewer deaths than C-5 because “it is the country’s widest highway.”
EDSA is listed as third deadliest road with 19 fatalities from vehicular mishaps last year. The figure was lower from 21 deaths in 2018 and 19 in 2017.
Radial Road 10 in Navotas ranked fourth with 13 fatalities (up from eight deaths) and MacArthur Highway in Valenzuela with 10 (down from 11 deaths).
EDSA is the most accident-prone thoroughfare in the metropolis for the third time in 2019, with a total of 17,382 road crashes from fatal and non-fatal causing injuries and damage to properties.
The MMDA said 17,276 vehicular accidents occurred along EDSA in 2018. The number was higher from 12,635 in 2017.
C-5 came in second with 8,735 road crashe (up from 8,252 in 2018), followed by Commonwealth Avenue with 4,998 (down from 5,148).
Ortigas Avenue registered 2,922 accidents followed by Mindanao Avenue with 2,896, Roxas Boulevard with 2.737 and Quezon Avenue with 2,635 in 2019.
