3 Reds surrender in Cagayan
BAGUIO CITY, Philippines – Three alleged supporters of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) surrendered to authorities in Cagayan on Wednesday.
Two of the surrenderees, identified only as Gilberto, 35, and Jomar, 28, both farmers, yielded to the Rizal municipal police at around 10 a.m., according to Brig. Gen. Angelito Casimiro, chief of the Cagayan Valley police.
The third surrenderee, Dencio, 53, gave himself up to the Sto. Niño municipal police.
The surrenderees were reportedly members of the “Militia ng Bayan,” or individuals who may or may not be directly involved in violent armed struggle, but can provide mass support to the revolutionary movement of the CPP-NPA.
The surrender of the rebels and their supporters as well as their armed auxiliary in the region was a result of an intensified campaign of the government against insurgency, authorities said.
