24,000 Taal victims remain in evacuation centers

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said various local government units are providing temporary shelter for the evacuees.

MANILA, Philippines — At least 6,857 families or 24,153 people affected by Taal Volcano’s unrest remain in 135 evacuation centers.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said various local government units are providing temporary shelter for the evacuees. 

The NDRRMC said there are also families displaced by the volcano’s activity who are staying with their relatives or friends in Metro Manila.

A total of 4,216 houses in Batangas were damaged and 328 others were destroyed due to Taal Volcano’s activity.

Meanwhile, damage to infrastructure and agriculture in Batangas, Laguna and Cavite was pegged at P3.4 billion.

 The NDRRMC said damage to fisheries was estimated at P1.6 billion.
