San Juan rolls out e-trikes in Greenhills
MANILA, Philippines — Months after stopping the operations of orange multi-cabs, the San Juan City government has rolled out electric tricycles or e-trikes in Greenhills for the benefit of the riding public.
Mayor Francis Zamora said the e-trikes operate through a franchise issued by the local government.
“These are three-wheelers so a franchise from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board is no longer needed. This is legal unlike the vehicles that operated here before,” Zamora said, referring to the multi-cabs that used to ply Wilson-P. Guevarra-Greenhills route.
On Wednesday, the city government rolled out four e-trikes, which can accommodate 12 passengers each. The fare for e-trike is P9.
Zamora assured the public that more e-trikes would be unveiled soon.
Last year, the city government provided its own multi-cabs that offered free rides to the public.
The lack of multi-cabs also opened up opportunities for “habal-habal” or street-hailed motorcycles, which were illegal.
“Habal-habal drivers charge P20 or more. If something happens in transit, who would you chase after? At least these e-trikes have permits,” Zamora said.
