LIST: Barangays in Batangas ordered to conduct mandatory evacuation

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of the Interior and Local Government office in Batangas on Wednesday released a list of barangays where residents are advised to immediately conduct mandatory evacuation following the eruption of Taal Volcano.

According to the agency, the list was generated by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology using the HazardHunterPH application.

Phivolcs earlier said barangays within the 14 kilometers radius of Taal Volcano is a high-risk zone.

The DILG said these barangays are susceptible to ballistic projectiles, base surge and volcanic tsunami.

Ballistic projectile was defined as “rocks hurled into the air by an erupting volcano,” while base surges are “ring-shaped clouds of gas and suspended solid debris that moves radially outward at high velocity from the base of a vertical eruption column.”

Meanwhile, Phivolcs said volcanic tsunamis “occur in caldera lakes when water is displaced by deformation of the lake floor caused by rising magma.”

It could create a wave that could hit lakeshore communities.

The institute said a volcanic tsunami may occur if the Taal Volcano’s status was raised to level 5, the highest alert level. Alert level 4 was hoisted over the volcano since Sunday, this means that a hazardous eruption is imminent.
