MANILA, Philippines — Motorcycle taxi firm Angkas yesterday clarified that the new weight restrictions on its mobile app is simply for the safety of both passengers and drivers.

Netizens questioned the weight restriction, saying it discriminated against heavier people.

“It’s all about safety. This is based on our discussions with the DOTr at the start of the pilot back in June 2019,” Angkas head of operations David Medrana said in a statement, referring to the Department of Transportation.

Medrana said Angkas is in the “data collection phase” and added that it will treat the sensitive data with care.

Weight is not yet factored in the bookings made on their platform despite the feature – which can deny a ride to a heavy passenger – being available on the app, Medrana said.

“Eventually, our goal is to ensure all bookings match you with the most appropriate bike and biker,” he said.

He said that the new feature should not have any impact on bookings as the pilot run continues.

Angkas is one of three players testing out the motorcycle-taxi sector in the country under an extended three-month pilot program that ends in March.
