MANILA, Philippines — President Duterte yesterday expressed hope that the freedom fought for by Jose Rizal would strengthen Filipinos’ nationalism as they fight the social ills plaguing the country.

In his Rizal Day message, Duterte noted that the national hero’s life and legacy have inspired countless others to dedicate their lives to serving the nation.

“May the freedom we now enjoy be cherished, be further fortified and kept thriving through the solidarity that we show in combating illegal drugs, corruption and crimes,” he said.

The President asked the youth to emulate Rizal’s heroism by always thinking of the greater good.

“Let us keep the embers of nationalism alive as we face the challenges of apathy and divisiveness, and triumph over them just like what Rizal did more than 120 years ago,” Duterte said. “Together, let us strengthen and protect the liberty that our heroes unselfishly shed their blood for.”

Duterte led the commemoration of the 123rd anniversary of the martyrdom of Rizal in Davao City before visiting earthquake-affected communities in North Cotabato and Davao del Sur.

Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said Rizal was a “beacon of hope, unity, and valor” when injustice, discrimination and racial persecution ruled over the country.

Vice President Leni Robredo urged Filipinos to follow the examples of Rizal, who proved that change could be achieved without resorting to “brutal solutions.”

“The most effective way to address the country’s problem is to do what is right, in the right way. We can’t achieve real progress through brutal solutions, especially those that blatantly go against the law,” she said.

Senators urged Filipinos to find inspiration in the life and heroism of Rizal.

Sen. Bong Go said Rizal’s sacrifices for the country “remain alive in the hearts of the Filipinos.”

Detained Sen. Leila de Lima asked the people to “stand up against a despotic regime and uphold democratic principles for the benefit of the present and future generations.”

Sen. Francis Pangilinan asked Filipinos to remember Rizal for his fortitude and love of country.

Philippine National Police officer-in-charge Lt. Gen. Archie Gamboa said Rizal’s heroism should serve as an inspiration to police officers.
