Benguet lawmaker Fongwan, 68

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet, Philippines — Benguet lawmaker Nestor Fongwan Sr. died on Wednesday. He was 68.

“My father is now with his creator,” Fongwan’s son and Benguet board member Nestor Jr. said in a post on Facebook.

He said his father’s remains would be brought to their home in Barangay Puguis. The wake will start today.

The family of the lawmaker has yet to give details on the cause of his death.

Fongwan served as governor of Benguet for three terms from 2007 to 2016.  

He was mayor of this town from 1995 to 2001 and from 2004 to 2007. He served as vice mayor from 1992 to 1995 and councilor from 1988 to 1992.

“Our deepest sympathy to all you left behind... especially to the family of our action man Nestor Fongwan, who brought La Trinidad to greater heights. Thank you sir,” the La Trinidad municipal government said in a statement.

The flag at the House of Representatives was flown at half mast in honor of Fongwan.
