MAGUINDANAO, Philippines — Three members of the Dawlah Islamiya, also known as Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) were killed in an encounter with personnel of the Joint Task Force Central in Barangay Pusaw, Shariff Saidona on Tuesday.
Local government officials and barangay leaders told reporters yesterday that the bandits, identified only as Akmad, Ansari and Kedtung were charred beyond recognition when their hideout was hit by artillery strikes.
The fatalities are said to be relatives of BIFF leader Abdulmalik Esmael, alias Abu Toraife.
The military said rifles, improvised explosive devices, hand grenades and various types of ammunition were recovered during clearing operations.
The military offensive was launched after community leaders reported sightings of BIFF men.
Maj. Gen. Diosdado Carreon, 6th Infantry Division commander, said soldiers are bracing for possible attacks by the banditsin retaliation for their losses in recent encounters with government troopers.
Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, Western Mindanao Command chief, said the Westmincom would support the Joint Task Force Central in its campaign against BIFF men.
