MANILA, Philippines — An official of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) was shot dead by motorcycle-riding assailants in Muntinlupa City yesterday morning.
Corrections Officer 1 Porferio Bergula, assigned at the New Bilibid Prison’s medium security compound, died at the Muntinlupa Medical Center from four gunshots to the body.
BuCor spokesman Maj. Alberto Tapiru said Bergula had just stepped outside a pawnshop where he remitted money when the suspects fired at him.
The assailants fled toward San Guillermo street after the attack, witnesses told probers.
Tapiru said they have yet to determine if the killing of Bergula was job-related.
Bergula is the first jail officer slain under the watch of BuCor chief Gerald Bantag.
