NPA rebel, 16, surrenders in Bukidnon

Michael Punongbayan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — A 16-year-old fighter of the New People’s Army (NPA) has surrendered to the military in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon.

Identified only as Bulaw, the minor turned over a Carbine rifle and a hand grenade.

Eastern Mindanao Command chief Lt. Gen. Felimon Santos Jr. condemned the NPA for using minors in their effort to overthrow the government.

“This is a clear gross violation of children’s rights. Do not rob their future. Allow them to explore their potential freely and let children be children,” Santos said.

The teenager said he was recruited to join the NPA after he was invited to undergo an orientation on the rights of the youth.

The surrender of the minor was coordinated with the local social welfare office for psychosocial intervention.
