Veloso set to testify on December 12

MANILA, Philippines — Convicted drug trafficker Mary Jane Veloso, who is on death row in Indonesia, may finally be able to testify against her two illegal recruiters in December.

Presiding Judge Anarica Castillo-Reyes of the Nueva Ecija Regional Trial Court Branch 88 has tentatively scheduled the date of Veloso’s deposition on Dec. 12 against her alleged recruiters Maria Cristina Sergio and Julius Lacanilao, according to National Union of People’s Lawyers president Edre Olalia.

Sergio and Lacanilao are facing charges of human trafficking, illegal recruitment and swindling. 

“The trial court set the taking of Veloso’s testimony as the last prosecution witness,” Olalia said.

Veloso had been allowed to testify against her recruiters after the Supreme Court affirmed the decision of the Nueva Ecija RTC that she could take the deposition by written interrogation.
