Army mulls purchase of supersonic missiles

Michael Punongbayan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Army is eyeing to acquire what is considered to be the world’s fastest supersonic missiles from India.

Army Vice Commander Maj. Gen. Reynaldo Aquino and other military officers boarded the Indian Navy ship Sahyadri while docked at Manila’s South Harbor last week and were briefed about its missile defense capabilities.

Army spokesman Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala said among those discussed with the INS team was the possible acquisition of BrahMos missiles, which can be launched from a ship, an aircraft, submarine or by land.

“The Philippine Army is interested in acquiring this type of missile as it will strengthen our coastal defense operations,” Zagala said.

According to BrahMos Aerospace, the BrahMos missile has a flight range of 290 kilometers with a supersonic speed all through the flight, resulting in shorter flight time and ensuring lower dispersion of targets, quicker engagement time and non-interception by any known weapon system in the world.

In line with the Armed Forces’ Integrated Missile Defense System program, Zagala said the Army aims to advance its coordination with the Navy and Air Force in safeguarding the country from external threats.
