Teacher wounded in school shooting

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — A teacher was wounded in a gun attack at a public school in a remote village in Bukidnon on Tuesday.

Police said Zhydee Cabañelez was hit in the feet and shoulders.

Zhydee and her husband Ramil, also a teacher, were in her classroom at the Dalit Elementary School in Barangay Lumbayao, Valencia City when men wearing masks entered and opened fire. Ramil managed to hide under a table.

Zhydee is an active member of the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) and was an outstanding teacher awardee in her barangay.

The ACT condemned the gun attack, which it considers “a worst attack” on the union. It called on the Department of Education to exhaust all measures to bring the perpetrators to justice.
