‘LRT-2 fully operational in 2 to 3 months’

MANILA, Philippines — The Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) targets to restore full operations within two to three months, an official announced yesterday.

LRT-2 trips had been limited from Cubao to Recto stations after a fire damaged the railway system’s power rectifiers between the Anonas and Katipunan stations.

Five trains service passengers from Cubao to Recto stations from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

The Santolan, Katipunan and Anonas stations remain closed.

Hernando Cabrera, spokesman for the Light Rail Transit Authority that operates the LRT-2, said they could only repair the burnt power tranformers instead of replacing the entire equipment.

Cabrera said the completion period for the repair may take two to three months if parts could be replaced “component by component.”

The LRT-2 management earlier said it would take nine months before the full operations of the LRT-2 could be restored as spare parts for the repairs would have to be imported.

Three more LRT-2 stations in Manila will be built by 2023: Tutuban, Divisoria and Pier 4.

The LRTA awarded the P10.1-billion contract  for the train’s expansion project to Westrax Joint Venture on July 19.
