Chinese faces deportation for investment scams

Robertzon Ramirez - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — A 37-year-old Chinese businessman is facing deportation after the Bureau of Immigration (BI) arrested him in Pasay City on Monday, an official said yesterday.

Qian Bingxu is being held at the BI’s detention facility in Taguig City while the bureau is processing his deportation papers, Commissioner Jaime Morente said.

Qian is wanted in China for his alleged involvement in economic crimes and for reportedly swindling Chinese citizens through investment scams.

The Chinese government has cancelled the passport of Qian, who has been hiding in the Philippines since November 2018.

“There is no record that he applied for an extension of his stay as a tourist, which indicates he was already overstaying when arrested,” Morente said.

The Chinese embassy said the public security bureau in Liaoyuan issued a warrant for Qian’s arrest for allegedly accepting deposits from 1,100 persons who were promised high returns on their investment.

The BI said Qian will be blacklisted and banned from re-entering the Philippines after being deported.
