MANILA, Philippines — The journey toward the sainthood of a Filipino scavenger has started.

The Diocese of Cubao in Quezon City launched yesterday the cause for the beatification and canonization of Darwin Ramos.

Rev. Danilo Flores said they would exhaust all means to show to the Vatican that Ramos “has the reputation for holiness” and should be declared a saint.

Cubao Bishop Honesto Ongtioco said the rites for the declaration of the cause held at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Cubao was attended by Ramos’ mother Erlinda.

On March 29, the Vatican declared Ramos a “Servant of God,” which is the second of four steps in the Church’s canonization process for one to be declared as venerable.

Ramos died of Duchene muscular dystrophy at the Philippine Children’s Medical Center in Quezon City on Sept. 23, 2012. He was 17.
