MANILA, Philippines — Following media reports on his love life, Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto appealed to the public not to treat government officials like showbiz personalities.

The 30-year-old mayor clarified that he made the "joke" in an interview with GMA News TV's "Bawal ang Pasaway kay Mareng Winnie" to change the topic.

"It is definitely not newsworthy. If I knew it would get this much attention I wouldn't have answered," Sotto said on Twitter.

In an interview with economist and television show host Solita "Winnie" Monsod last week, Sotto said he had no girlfriend since birth but he was accepting "applicants."

"Wala ho. Masyadong naging busy, lalo na po ngayon. Busy sa trabaho," Sotto told Monsod.

"'Yon po talaga yung first question?" he also said when Monsod asked him about his personal life. He also said that getting into a relationship is the last thing on his mind.

"Talagang focus muna sa trabaho," he said.

He said the Pasig City government is working on long-term development plans that he can turn over to the city's next leader. He said planning is for longer than the nine years— three three-year terms—that he is allowed to serve if reelected.

"Hindi lang ito plano para sa akin. Ang magaling na leader maitu-turnover yan sa susunod na leader," he said.

In an interview with GMA News in May, Sotto also said he does not have time to look for a romantic interest and that he would rather sleep during his free time.

"Talagang 'pag may free time ako, mas gusto ko pang matulog or magpahinga na lang," he said. — Patricia Lourdes Viray
