MANILA, Philippines — A fire broke out at a four-story residential building in Barangay Pasong Tamo in Quezon City, leaving four persons dead before dawn yesterday.

Arson probers identified the fatalities as 80-year-old Ema Canlas; Genevieve Era, 46; Sierna Canlas, 38, and Christine Villaverde.

Oliver Canlas suffered injuries.

Reports said the fire started in Era’s apartment along Himlayan Road at around 2:26 a.m.

Investigation conducted by the Bureau of Fire Protection showed that an unattended candle left in the living room caused the blaze.

The fire reached the second alarm before it was put out after almost one hour.

Authorities said four apartment units were destroyed by the fire.

Damage to property was estimated at around P100,000.

Arson investigators said there was no electricity in the area prior to the fire.
