MANILA, Philippines — Manila Mayor Isko Moreno is a “total rock star,” United States ambassador Sung Kim said yesterday.

Moreno had paid a courtesy call on Kim at the US embassy yesterday morning, accompanied by his chief of staff Caesar Chavez.

Kim was with the embassy’s internal political chief Josh Morris for the duration of the 45-minute meeting.

“You bring new dynamism and energies to your position,” Kim said.

He said the US appreciates Moreno’s stand on the governrment’s anti-drug campaign, which is supportive but cautioning the police authorities to respect human rights.

“We appreciate your approach. You’re dealing with it in a manner that is consistent with human rights and rule of law,” Kim added.

He also cited Moreno for being a product of US State Department-sponsored International Visitors Leadership Program in 2011.

“We are proud of you being an alumnus. We want to claim that. We have a good success in identifying future leaders. That is one of the few that we are proud of,” Kim said.

Moreno told Kim about his policies and plans for the city.

When asked what keeps him awake at night, Moreno replied: “My greatest fear is for the people to accept that chaos is the norm in the city.”
