MANILA, Philippines — Marikina City has joined the list of local government units that has an anti-discrimination law to protect the rights of members of the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) community.
Mayor Marcelino Teodoro on Friday signed an ordinance passed recently by the city council, which gives equal opportunity and protection for LGBTQ members.
Under the ordinance, offenders will be fined P1,000 (first offense) up to P5,000 (third offense).
Violators will be penalized with at least 60 days in prison.
The law mandates the creation of an Anti-Discrimination Council, which will be composed of the mayor, eight officials of the city government and three LGBTQ representatives.
Teodoro said the ordinance is meant to criminalize the act of discrimination against LGBTQ members in Marikina.
Teodoro urged LGBTQ members to continue fighting for their rights.
