COTABATO CITY  , Philippines  —   A five-year-old boy, who was attacked by at least 10 stray dogs in Isabela City, Basilan on Monday, died while being treated in a hospital yesterday.

Edzhar Damsani was walking toward the stall of his grandmother in a bus terminal in Barangay Agiada when he was attacked and bitten by the dogs. He was transferred to the Zamboanga City Medical Center in this city from a hospital in Isabela.

A photo of the badly injured boy went viral, prompting the city veterinary office to round up all stray dogs near the terminal.

City health officials said at least 300 cases of dog bites were recorded in recent months.

Mayor-elect Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman vowed to address the problem with stray dogs. “This incident calls our attention to the urgency of the issue,” she said.
