John Unson - The Philippine Star

NORTH COTABATO, Philippines — A member of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters, who escaped from detention last year, was shot dead when he allegedly drew his gun as law enforcers tried to recapture him yesterday.

Torag Sandalan Sabal died on the spot in an operation conducted by personnel of the Midsayap police and the Army’s 34th Infantry Battalion in Barangay Olandang.

Sabal was among 20 escapees from the provincial jail in Barangay Amas, Kidapawan City. He had pending cases for multiple murder, drug trafficking and robbery.

Lt. Col. Aldrin Gonzalez, Soccsksargen police spokesman, said Sabal’s companion Nasser Macabangen Usman was arrested for illegal possession of firearm.
