Murder suspect killed by cops

MANILA, Philippines — A man accused of killing his sister’s brother-in-law was shot dead by police in Port Area, Manila over the weekend.

Roy Castillo, of Mabini, Batangas, allegedly stabbed dead Rolando Vendollo, 33, before the suspect was killed by responding policemen.

Initial investigation showed that Castillo and his companion, known only as Mario, visited the family of his sister Resaly, 28, at Block 15, Baseco Compound on Friday.

Castillo, Vendollo and Resaly’s husband engaged in a drinking session, according to Capt. Henry Navarro, head of the Manila Police District (MPD) homicide unit.

Police said Castillo had been trying to call his wife on the phone to ask for money but to no avail. This prompted the Vendollo family to allow him to stay overnight.

On Saturday, police said the suspect became irritable.

Probers said Castillo broke into the room of Resaly and held her against her will along with her three children.

When Resaly started screaming for help, Vendollo tried to help the victims, but he was stabbed by Castillo.

Vendollo died at the scene from a stab wound in the chest. The fleeing suspect was mobbed by angry residents.

Castillo managed to enter another house where he hid.

MPD Station 5 commander Lt. Col. Igmedio Bernaldez ordered operatives of Baseco Police Community Precinct to arrest the suspect after Resaly reported the incident.

Bernaldez said police asked Castillo to surrender but he attacked them, prompting Cpl. Rowie Lizano to fire at the suspect.

Castillo was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital from gunshots to the body.
