Reds kill Agusan Norte deputy cop chief

BUTUAN CITY  , Philippines  —  The deputy police chief of Carmen town in Agusan del Norte was shot dead by suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels on Wednesday.

M/Sgt. Jimmer Omisol had just alighted from his car in Barangay Tagcaton when the rebels tried to kidnap him, Brig. Gen. Gilbert Cruz, Caraga police director, citing initial investigation, said.

”He was able to shoot and hit his assailants... The hero cop fought until his last breath,” Cruz said.

Eleven bullet shells for a caliber .45 pistol were recovered at the scene, which is near a police and military detachment.

Omar Ibarra of the NPA’s Northwestern Mindanao Command claimed responsibility for the killing, saying Omisol planted shabu and firearms seized from arrested NPA sympathizers and civilians.

Cruz condemned the killing even as he denied the allegations against Omisol.
