MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) will provide legal assistance to police officers who face charges in connection with the ambush of the aide of lawyer and senatorial candidate Glenn Chong last December.

“We will be glad to give legal assistance to our people on the ground,” PNP chief Gen. Oscar Albayalde said  yesterday.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has recommended the filing of double murder charges against 21 police officers over the killing of Chong’s aide Richard Santillan and Gessamyn Casing in Cainta, Rizal on Dec. 9.

The NBI said obstruction of justice charges should also be filed against Calabarzon police director Brig. Gen. Edward Carranza for giving a false testimony during a Senate hearing.

Albayalde said the filing of charges would give the police officers a chance to give their side at a proper forum.

Santillan was driving Chong’s car with two companions when they reportedly encountered police officers, who were looking for a stolen vehicle.
