MANILA, Philippines — The Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) is receiving criticism after it banned not only bottled beverages but all items containing liquids such as perfume, rubbing alcohol and lotion.

In a Facebook post, Arnie Gabas said commuters should go to MRT-3 stations earlier than their usual time to avoid getting stuck in long queues as security officers are allegedly confiscating not only bottled drinks but also anything that contains liquid.

“Bawal na daw any form of liquid sa MRT. It’s better to leave your perfume, alcohol, etc. at home. Mas agahan pumila, kasi mas matagal na ang pila ngayon,” Gabas said on Facebook.

Gabas’ post earned more than 5,000 reactions and was shared more than 15,000 times as of yesterday afternoon. More than 8,000 netizens expressed their dismay while some supported the MRT’s effort.

The MRT-3 has yet to issue a statement on the total liquids ban as of 4 p.m. yesterday.

National Capital Region Police Office chief Director Guillermo Eleazar said the Philippine National Police asked the Department of Transportation and the MRT-3, an attached agency of the DOTr, to impose security measures following the bombings in Mindanao.

Eleazar said that they have only asked the MRT-3’s cooperation and stressed that the agencies have the right to set their own guidelines.
